What is wrong with my hermit crab?

my new crab is just sitting in a corner and not doing much. if i pick him up he comes right out and appears fine. he is the only crab in the tank so i think he might be lonley. i am pplanning on getting him a couple friends at the beach(10 of them). but anyway plz help me.
